Planning a winter trip with a toddler sounds magical — snow angels, hot chocolate, family photos in the snow until packing begins.
As a Singapore-based mum, my biggest worry before our first cold-weather trip wasn’t the snow — it was how to pack everything without going over baggage limits.
After a few winter holidays (and a few mistakes), here’s what I’ve learned
1. Pack Only One Outerwear Per Person
It’s tempting to bring 2-3 jackets “just in case,” but one good down jacket is enough — especially when it’s waterproof and windproof.

2. Layer Smart, Not Heavy
For toddlers, layering is key:
-
Heat tech innerwear
-
Fleece pullover
-
Padded pants / snow pants (rented)
-
Wool socks and waterproof shoes
Keep extra socks, mittens, and a beanie in your day bag — they get wet fast while playing in snow!
3. Don’t Forget Toddler Travel Essentials
These saved our sanity on the go:
-
A foldable stroller with rain cover
-
A few snack packs and warm water bottle
-
Their favourite small toy or book
-
Extra moisturiser & lip balm (cold air is drying!)
We used to overpack — now we go by the motto: “If the hotel has it, don’t bring it.”
4. Use Zip Bags
Use ziplock bags for:
-
Socks and underwear
-
Toiletries
-
Spare toddler outfits for in-flight accidents
