Travelling from Singapore to Japan this December and wondering what winter clothes to wear?
You may already have a puffer jacket from your previous trip, or you’re thinking of buying a winter jacket and snow boots in Singapore. But before spending hundreds of dollars, check where in Japan you’re actually going.
December weather in Japan can be very different depending on the destination.
Tokyo and Osaka can be around 5°C to 13°C, while Hokkaido can fall below freezing with snow. That means the winter jacket you need for Tokyo may be very different from what you need for Sapporo.

How Cold Is Japan in December?
Japan is a long country, so there is no single “Japan winter temperature.”
Your winter outfit should be based on your actual destination.

So if you’re only visiting Tokyo and Osaka, you probably don’t need the same extreme-cold jacket you would wear in Harbin at -20°C.
However, if your itinerary includes Hokkaido, Sapporo, Niseko or other snowy areas, you need to prepare differently.
What to Wear in Tokyo in December
Tokyo in December is cold, but usually not extreme.
For many Singapore travellers, a practical outfit would be:
Thermal top → Sweater or fleece → Puffer/down jacket
For the bottom:
Long pants + optional thermal leggings
Add a scarf or beanie when needed, particularly during colder mornings and evenings.
A good insulated puffer or down jacket should generally be more practical than a bulky extreme-cold parka.
One thing first-time travellers sometimes overlook is how often you’ll move between cold outdoor weather and heated trains, restaurants, department stores and shopping malls.
That’s why layering is better than wearing one extremely heavy jacket.
You can remove your fleece or unzip your jacket indoors rather than feeling hot and uncomfortable all day.
Do You Need Snow Boots in Tokyo in December?
Usually, no.
Snow is not common in central Tokyo in December.
For a typical Tokyo sightseeing itinerary, comfortable walking shoes with good grip should be sufficient in normal dry conditions.
Remember, you could easily walk more than 10,000–20,000 steps a day in Japan.
Comfort matters.
If you’re only visiting Tokyo, don’t buy bulky snow boots simply because it’s “winter in Japan.”
What to Wear in Osaka and Kyoto in December
Osaka’s average December temperatures are around 5°C to 12°C.
A similar layering system to Tokyo generally works well:
Thermal → Sweater/fleece → Insulated winter jacket
Pair it with long pants and comfortable walking shoes.
Kyoto can feel particularly chilly during mornings and evenings, so carrying a scarf, gloves or beanie can be useful.
If you’re visiting outdoor attractions, temples or spending long periods walking outside, you may feel colder than someone moving mainly between shopping malls and restaurants.
What to Wear in Shirakawago in December
Shirakawago is a very different winter experience from Tokyo or Osaka.
If snow is expected during your visit, you need to think about both warmth and staying dry.
Consider:
Thermal base layer → Fleece/wool mid layer → Warm insulated jacket
For your lower body:
Thermal leggings → Warm or water-resistant pants
And for your feet:
Warm waterproof footwear with good grip
Regular sneakers may become uncomfortable when walking through snow or slush.
This is where proper winter boots or snow boots start becoming much more useful.
What to Wear in Hokkaido and Sapporo in December
If you’re travelling to Sapporo, Niseko, Furano or other parts of Hokkaido, don’t pack as though you’re going to Tokyo.
Hokkaido is much colder.
Snow can already cover Sapporo from early December, and temperatures can fall below freezing.

But if you’re travelling from Singapore and only use heavy winter clothing once every few years, think about how often you’ll actually use it after the trip.

And your next winter trip may require completely different clothing.
