China is The Rising Star of Family Winter Holiday

If you’ve already done Japan and Korea, you’re probably wondering — “Where else can we go for a snowy winter holiday with the kids?” Many families are  heading to China — and here’s why you might want to consider it too.

1. Harbin Ice Festival Is Pure Magic for Kids

I started looking into “where to see snow and ice sculptures in China”, and Harbin kept popping up. The Harbin Ice & Snow Festival is like something out of a fairytale — giant castles made of ice, glowing in rainbow lights, snow mazes, and even ice slides for kids. It’s cold (really cold!), but the experience? Unforgettable.

2. Affordable Snow Adventures Beyond the Usual

Compared to Japan or Korea, China’s winter cities are a lot more affordable. Flights into places like Changbaishan, Zhangjiakou, or even Yabuli Ski Resort are often cheaper than flying to Hokkaido — and the snow is just as real.

 3. Family-Friendly Culture + Warm Food = Comfort

What surprised me? How welcoming the locals were to kids. We tried northern-style hotpot, stayed in a family suite with heated floors, and took a snow walk in a quiet mountain village where locals offered us hot sweet potatoes! It’s not just a holiday — it’s a new cultural experience for the kids, far from their usual theme parks and shopping malls.

4. Travel Tips from Our Planning

  • Packing: The weather is colder than Japan/Korea — layer up!

  • Clothing: Rent warm jackets, snow boots, and pants instead of buying — it’s cheaper and more sustainable
