Why Japan & Korea Are Still Favourite Winter Holiday Spots

Planning your 2025 year-end family holiday from Singapore?
If you’re dreaming about snowflakes, ski slopes, and steaming bowls of ramen after a day of snow play, you’re not alone. Our family has done winter trips from Singapore two years in a row — and guess what? Many families are heading back to Japan and South Korea this December.

And no, it’s not because they can’t think of anywhere else to go. It’s because… these destinations just work so well for families with kids.

Why Japan and Korea are still the best winter destinations for Singaporean families (in 2025!)

1. They have real snow and endless family fun

In Hokkaido or Nagano, you’re guaranteed soft, powdery snow. Perfect for building snowmen or trying skiing for the first time. In Korea, Vivaldi Park or Yongpyong has beginner-friendly slopes and snow parks that are great for young children.

2. Direct flights, safe cities, and easy to get around

As a Singaporean parent, I want my trip to be convenient and safe. And both countries tick the boxes:

  • Direct flights to Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Sapporo

  • Efficient train systems (yes, even with kids and luggage!)

  • Clean streets, friendly people, and plenty of convenience stores

3. Kid-friendly winter experiences that go beyond snow

We always plan a mix of snow play + fun experiences like:

  • Strawberry picking in Korea (sweetest ones ever!)

  • Snow monkey park in Nagano, Japan

  • Hanbok photoshoot in Gyeongbokgung Palace

  • Tokyo Disneyland & Everland with their magical Christmas lights

We once skipped skiing altogether and spent a whole day in a snowy town playing, eating, and soaking in an onsen (family rooms available!) — it was honestly one of the best days of our trip.

Is it expensive to travel in winter with kids? Not really.

This is a question I get from friends all the time:
“Isn’t a winter trip super expensive for a family of four?”
Not if you plan smart. Here’s what’s worked for us:

Budget tips from a Singaporean mum:

  • Fly during the last week of school — cheaper than Christmas week

  • Book your flights early (July to Sept)

  • Stay at apartment-style hotels with washing machines and kitchen (super helpful!)

  • Rent winter wear instead of buying — no need to stuff jackets in your HDB wardrobe all year
